I'm estimating it to be 15-18 + km of downhill and uphill cycling, Mr. Surfer, you are a beast for letting me follow you. From Stovner to Grorud to Kalbakken to Alna to IKEA Furuset to Grorud again up the hill and back home. Good job!

How to make it in America

- how two dudes try to make it big in the Big Apple

I wasn’t a big fan of the premise in the beginning, I’ll admit that. I kept thinking, that it would be in the same vein as the other ”HBO-show-showing-how-your-ife-would-be-if-it-was-dramatized-and-you-were-highly-successful-in-Hollywood, ”Entourage”. Of course, they, Vince and the gang. already achieved a bit of success. But what about those who are just bubbling under the surface, eager to make a name for themselves?

Here’s where ”How To Make It In America” (or HTMIIA) comes in. I saw the pilot one late night and I think I never looked back after hitting that play button. The show has a distinct taste of 2010 especially with the intro that’s filled with pictures of the life in New York, kind of like those you would find on a decent photoblog. It caters to the cool, the hip who like the simple, but effective fonts and stop-motion sequences. Every scene-transition uses photographic images that are crisp and makes us read cinematography in a new way. We’ve seen this kind of use before, but it’s only now that I actually notice it. Must be the New York scene.

In the show, we have dopey-looking Bryan Greenberg playing the main protagonist, Ben Epstein. A late 20-something graphic artist / designer / ”good at drawing” New Yorker who’ve just failed selling his own line of designed skate decks with his annoying, but optimistic sidekick, Cam Calderon. They have big ideas, but as one character in the show duly notes, they have trouble following through. Instead they try to force their ideas on already successful people and they use their well-connected friend Domingo, played by Kid Cudi to get in touch with them. They’re bound to fail. No business plan, no real funding and no idea how to conduct business.

I’ll just air my two cents here now. The show seems to try to educate or show that making it in America is about having an unique idea and be organized. Leave personal stuff out of it (Ben has problems getting over his ex) and have a financial backer. No money, no production as the boys learn this pretty quick. But we still love an underdog and we root for them. But is it a good show? I wish it was funnier and I wish they’d focus less on Rene (he has some funny bits though.)

But to be fair, the show is enjoyable with girls like Shannyn Sossamon and even a guest appearance by Samaire Armstrong (give this girl a main role please?). But it feels like watching the character ”Turtle” without Vince. A guy who wants to do stuff, but need others to do it for him. I actually want to see more of Kid Cudi. Right now, he’s just the token black guy and he should get more face-time. I don’t really care much for Cam’s cousin Rene and his ”Rasta Monsta” problem.

I’m still hoping the boys make it though. The American Dream still exists, right?

I went to a gaming tournament yesterday and it was maaaad fun. 40++ contestants in a bar way out in Røyken, Drammen, good food and good planning made one hell of a fun tournament.

The japanese are the best. I'm such a nerd that I'm seriously getting hype, waiting to WATCH this tournament. Sick stuff.

It's been a while, but I think I'll focus on giving you some music for this post. After all, this IS FRESH MUSICOLOGY.

Here we go:

This korean song was all the rage in the Philippines this Christmas. I learnt the dance by watching little kids do it and this song even made the U.S Billboard 100 charts! First korean artists ever to do so. It sticks to your brain like.. rice.

I didn't say it was a good song. :P But it's addicting.

Another supergroup is the Super Junior-M. Funny thing about this group is that this boyband has one guy that suits every possible demographic out there. They're all "good-looking", there's one who has a questionable sexuality, one for the cougars and even a chubby guy. Love the concept.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett! Read this book and Robinson Crusoe a million times when I was young. But The Secret Garden was my favorite book because it had such a happy ending. I always dreamt of having a garden full of beautful flowers and make even the most cold-hearted of people smile. But of course, I didn't grow up in a manor in the English countryside, so a secret garden was out of the question. But this book made me believe that as long as you put your mind to it and be stubborn, you can achieve everything you want.

(This is gonna be a long one, a bit sappy maybe, but it's a retrospect! Give me the benefit of the doubt here.)

Everyone says hindsight is 20/20 or perfect. Unless Dr.Emmett Brown gets his hands on a plutonium core and rides that Delorean back to the past, we're all stuck with the decisions we made on this road called Life. At least once in your life, you lie in your bed and start reminiscing about how things were better then and what you could do to make it better now. I do. Learn from my mistakes and be glad I did them.

But the one thing I like the best about reminiscing is thinking of the things that made me the person I am today. Being 22, I can't remember all the shit I've done as a young hoodlum growing up. (joke). But I do remember the important memories.

My earliest memory of a semblance of life, is sitting on the swings with Eileen back in kindergarten. Yes, I do not remember anything before that. I was a retard. Swings and Eileen. She was my girlfriend and I was the shit. This was back in the days of Turtles and ugly sweaters of Sesame Street characters.

This was me back then. Little guy with brown jacket, purple pants and blue suede shoes. The others are my fambam representing from Stovner.

That's enough reminiscing for one post. Anyone want to know more? I got at least one good story up my sleeve. Promise.

On this Louis Vuitton ad we see the world's first female astronaut, Sally Ride. We also see Buzz Aldrin of "Apollo 11 fame" and Jim Lovell, the man who was so close to getting on the moon on the disastrous Apollo 13 expedition.

When I saw this picture, it took me back 17 years, back to the days of the Turtles, kindergarten and Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Being young, I dreamed of going to space and walking on the moon. When others wanted to be policeofficers, firemen and doctors, I wanted to discover new worlds, being at the forefront of exploratory expeditions and garnering all the fame. But all that ended the day an adult said that it's impossible to become an astronaut and go into space if you're from Norway. Because of her, I turned to videogames instead. Boo on you.

But the lesson of the story is: Don't let others tell you what you CAN'T do. Focus only on what you CAN do. Let your haters be your motivators and all that schwag.

And let's all return to the romantic notions of landing on the moon and going into space. Forget all that "Mmm, it's good to drink our pee in space" - crap.

The reason she made me pissed is because she insulted me and the whole legion of videogamers out there with a show she did last year. Video games is culture, not a childrens hobby you grow out of. It's also the only industry that is actually earning revenue while we're still facing a financial crisis and it is now the biggest industry in entertainment. At least Oprah would give away games to the women in the crowd and try to make up their minds. I hope.

This is why I hate women in packs. Especially when they're all ganging up on one retard who can't even defend himself. He's a fall-guy for crying out loud! He just takes shit. I'd smack Tyra for calling me a 13-year old. Really, I would. End of angry rant. Have a good week!

Everyone that reads this blog, knows I went to China last month. One of the most interesting trips we made, was to NRK's offices (Norwegian Broadcasting Channel) and their Asia correspondent Ole Torp. Hearing about the daily life of a man who've been working years in newspapers, radio and tv, really inspired me. Working around the clock, chasing stories around the Asian continent, both east and west, presenting news for a Norwegian audience that wakes up 6 hours later in your workday, seems in a way exhilarating for a young seedling like me. But Mr.Torp, being in the business for quite a while, worried about the fact that his workday starts at 0800 AM and often doesn't end before 7 PM. But he loves the job. So do I.

When we were there, he told us about a reportage (can you use this word?) about a girl, Siyu, an earthquake survivor from the Chengdu catastrophe which happened exactly one year ago today. It's the story of her homecoming to her family who lived in the area where the earthquake hit and the stories of her classmates, neighbors and strangers who she befriends. It's a sad story, made me shed a tear or five, and you learn something about how Chinese handle disasters of this magnitude. All the world put their eyes to this catastrophy and suddenly China got a lot of unwanted attention because of this incident. Remember, this was only three months before the Beijing Olympics.

Even though the media and their cameras disappears, we can't forget that the lives of the ones who survived, go on.

It's 25 mins long, but I really think it's a nice way to end a day as sunny as this. It's a bit intense and hits home with me, so much that it gets a bit uncomfortable. My thoughts go out to all the children who perished this day, a year ago.

I hate leaving a place that has been good, kind, generous, inspirational, educational, engrossing, wonderful and absolutely stunning to me. That place being China, mainly Beijing and Shanghai. Being with awesome and special people, I've enjoyed: places we've seen together, experiences we've had together, laughters we've shared and the joyful complaints we've moaned to each other! I must say this has been truly an honor for me to be a part of a trip that've fulfilled all my expectations and then some more. So to the China Crew of '09, I salute you!

Being a stupid, stupid ratmonster/man, I forgot the battery to my camera in the damn charger, so I had only the camcorder to document me being in a great city. But luckily, (just about every day) one of the girls saves my ass and is always prepared for dumb stuff that I manage to do. So a big, courteous, non-chalant, but still a very gratifying "thank you" to you-know-who.

I'm making a video as well, but as I caught some kind of a stomach bug on the last day of Shanghai, my mind and body has craved the attention of the toilet and not the mac. Add a weak fever/an increase in my internal temperature to the point of sweating profusely back in Beijing, I've been a bit occupied. But again thanks to the angels, I've eaten power noodles, been medicated and slept quite a bit. And now I am a healthy man. But I can't fall asleep again.. 4 whole days left of China.

Me at the Beijing Poly Theatre drinking an overpriced coffee mocha whilst waiting to attend a magic show last week or the last week before that. But yeah, MAGIC SHOW. It was great. When I get kids, I'll bring 'em to one just like it. I need to sleep. Good night.

I fell in love with Shanghai. Beautiful city, even though I spent most of the time recuperating from the fortnight's hijinks and gallivanting in the city's weird bars and clubs. I've got new footage from Shanghai. I'll try putting it together.
